University of Siegen Makes Gains in “THE Subject Rankings”

Success in the 2025 International Subject Rankings from “Times Higher Education” (THE) magazine. The University of Siegen gained significant ground in two of four subject areas, with “Social Science” and “Business & Economics” ranked higher than a year ago.

In “Social Science,” the University of Siegen now stands in the 401-500 range. (By comparison, it landed between 601–800 in 2024). “Business & Economics” now ranks between 301-400, climbing the ladder from the 401-500 range a year ago. This accomplishment comes even as more higher educational institutions joined the rankings, raising the competitive bar. “Engineering” also performed well in the rankings, with the university successfully defending its position in the 301-400 range.

The subject rankings involve audits of universities around the globe based on statistical evaluations of teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.

The University of Siegen achieved significant improvements in two metrics in particular: The “Business & Economics,” “Engineering,” and “Physical Science” units all achieved significant quality bumps in the “Industry” metric, in some cases doubling their scores from a year ago. The areas of “Business & Economics,” “Physical Science,” and “Social Science” saw similar rises in the "Research Environment” metric.

THE subject rankings are a spin-off of the major annual university rankings conducted by the “Times Higher Education” magazine, most recently released in October 2024. In 2025, the University of Siegen placed overall in THE ranking's 501-600 group, despite the addition of roughly 200 more universities than one year earlier. The complete rankings can be found online.
